Fill your brain with these fascinating factoids! Today we’re talking BUGS!

  • Bees have to travel around 70,000 kilometres to make just half a kilogram of honey.
  • A slug has four noses. Imagine all the boogers when its got a cold!
  • Locusts can eat their own weight in food in one day! It takes us humans about half a year to do that.
  • A group of cicadas is called a cloud.
  • Mosquitoes are more likely to bite kids rather than adults, blonde-haired people rather than brown-haired people, and people wearing dark clothing. They’re also attracted to people who just ate bananas or those who just exercised!
  • Flies jump backwards during takeoff.
  • Beetles are one of the most popular pets in Japan and can be bought in department stores.
  • Scientists have actually performed brain surgery on cockroaches!

Orange sheep?

April 15th, 2011 by Ange | No Comments | Leave a comment | Filed in Wild |

Have you ever seen an orange sheep? Neither have we, but they do exist! Farmer John Heard in Devon, UK has dyed his 250 sheep orange. Cases of sheep-rustling (sheep being stolen) have risen in the UK - John has had 200 of his flock stolen over the past few years. The dye doesn’t harm them. It’s non-toxic and wears off (so the sheep can keep up with the latest fashion trends!). We wonder what colour they’ll be wearing next year?

Cows stressed by daylight savings time

March 29th, 2011 by Ange | No Comments | Leave a comment | Filed in Wild |

Russia has decided to permanently stay in daylight savings time because the changing back and forth between times stresses out their cows and even people! It’s only an hour’s difference but cows are used to being milked at certain times and get confused when they are milked at different times. It has been decided that when it becomes Autumn in Russia, the country will not change its clocks back one hour to normal time to help ease the cows’ stress.

We hope Australian cows don’t get stressed when daylight savings time ends this Sunday and the clocks go back one hour at 3am!

Sheep gives birth to lamb-dog!

March 28th, 2011 by Ange | 2 Comments | Leave a comment | Filed in Wild |

A sheep in Fugu County in the Shaanxi Province of China, has given birth to a lamb that looks and acts like a dog! The lamb has a woolly coat like a lamb, but its nose, eyes, paws, and tail look like they belong to a dog. Tourists are now going to the farm in Fugu County to see the lamb-dog, but vets say that it’s impossible for a sheep to give birth to a dog and that the lamb is just abnormal.

China’s Pigeon Army

March 4th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Leave a comment | Filed in Wild |

The Chinese army is recruiting 10 000 pigeons and training them for military and communication purposes. If the communication system ever breaks down in China, then pigeons would be able to help save the day and deliver important messages. They could also be used for military missions between borders. China has been using pigeons to help their army since 1950, but so far it has only a few hundred pigeons not 10 000!
